Licensee Program Guidelines for Hurricane Harvey

The Consumer Protection Division (CPD) oversees producers of consumer health goods and service providers to ensure public safety.

CPD’s top priority is REACH; we REACH to ensure the health and safety of Texans. We do so with:

  • Reliable rules and standards;
  • Efficient administration of activities;
  • Accountability to citizens and stakeholders;
  • Compliance actions when necessary; and
  • Help through technical advice and communication.

CPD has four areas of oversight:

  • Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Care System provides the vital link between sudden injury or illness and emergency medical care for all Texans.
  • Food and Drug Safety protects Texans from unnecessary illness and death by overseeing people and entities who provide ingestible, medical, and topical products to the public; or use processes (e.g. pasteurization, sterile drug manufacturing, tattooing) that, if done incorrectly, endanger the public.
  • Radiation Control protects Texans from unnecessary exposure to radiation by overseeing those who produce and or use radiation or generate radioactive products.
  • Environmental Health protects the public from potential long-term illnesses by ensuring environmentally hazardous materials are not unnecessarily endangered.

The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) focuses on health programs that serve the general population.  As part of DSHS, the CPD promotes public health through oversight of individuals and entities that provide consumer health goods and services to the public. We provide statewide leadership to promote safe and healthy communities, working in partnership with other state, federal, and local agencies and organizations.

With four areas of oversight, the CPD is well-positioned to provide excellent public health guidance, oversight and protections for all Texans.
