HIV Nucleic Acid Amplified Testing (NAAT)

Around one-third of Texans diagnosed HIV-positive first learn of their HIV status within twelve months of progressing to AIDS. This routine point of serological diagnosis and clinical intervention in HIV infection is during the chronic stage of infection, usually years after the individual first acquired the disease. The acute phase of HIV infection, which comprises the first three to four months after infection, represents a period of high viral load and a period of high rates of forward transmission of HIV to others. The ability to diagnosis acute HIV infection presents an important prevention opportunity.
