2003 - 2004 Texas Influenza Surveillance Information
The flu activity level for week 47 in Texas, 11/16/03 to 11/22/03, is widespread. Widespread means there is increased flu activity, (flu-like illness or positive lab result), in at least half of the regions. There are 11 public health regions in Texas and flu activity has been reported and/or identified in all 11 regions. The dominant strain in circulation is the influenza A H3 virus. Strain analysis from representative influenza A viruses in Texas are either A/Panama-like or A/Fujian-like. The Panama strain is one of the flu A strains contained in this season's flu vaccine, and the A/Fujian-like strain represents a slight antigenic drift that is likely to have some degree of cross protection with the strains in the vaccine. Influenza B is also in circulation and further analysis is pending from the CDC.
