2004 - 2005 Texas Influenza Surveillance Information
Influenza activity in Texas for the week ending May 21, is No Activity. This does not mean there is no flu activity, just low levels. There is no culture confirmed influenza to report in the state.
The Sentinel Provider Surveillance Network (SPSN) indicates ILI activity for last week near baseline levels. The SPSN is a critical component necessary for evaluating flu activity in the state. The provider contributions to the knowledge of ILI activity is much appreciated. While reporting is needed especially during flu season we would appreciate participants to continue reporting year round. It is especially important to remain vigilant for influenza activity in the "off season". Concern remains high regarding human cases of avian influenza.
From our regional flu coordinators, only Region 8 reported low flu activity. No other region reported flu activity.
As noted above, it is critical that we remain alert for flu activity or unusual respiratory illness year round. Again, specimens may be submitted to the state health department at any time.
To all the reporters of flu activity at the local and regional levels, clinics, physicians and other providers, as well as laboratories, thanks for all of your assistance. A summary of the flu season will be posted during the summer.
