Dear Submitter:

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Laboratory strives to provide quality, cost-effective public health-related laboratory testing. Fees to cover laboratory testing costs at DSHS have not been significantly changed since 2002.  That is why it is important that DSHS identify and implement cost-recovery methods for testing services wherever possible.  Over the last year, DSHS completed a comprehensive cost analysis to determine appropriate costs for providing laboratory services.  Effective September 1, 2007, DSHS will implement a new laboratory fee schedule based on this cost study.  Every effort has been made to keep fee increases to a minimum.

It is important that laboratory submission forms be properly completed to assure that the appropriate payor is billed. If the information is incomplete or incorrect, the submitter will be billed for testing. Sample test request forms and instructions for completion are on the DSHS Laboratory Website.

In the event of potential communicable or vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks, DSHS will work to identify funding sources to cover costs associated with any necessary testing.  Regardless of whether a funding source is identified or not, these specimens would still be tested.

Should you need additional information, please refer to the contact information below:

  • Billing questions: email DSHS Billing Branch, or call 888-963-7111 ext. 7317. Calls received before 12:00 pm will be returned by 5:00 pm on the same day; calls received after 12:00 pm will be returned by 12:00 pm the following day.
  • Printed copy of fee schedule: To request a printed version of the fee schedule, email Susan Hoffpauir, or call 888-963-7111 ext. 6030.

Please be assured that DSHS will continue to provide outstanding public health laboratory testing to protect Texas citizens.  We look forward to continuing our partnership with you.
