Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS)

The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is a survey designed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to identify and track selected maternal experiences before, during, and after pregnancy. Texas has been participating in PRAMS since 2002. Mothers who are residents of Texas and who have recently given birth may complete and submit PRAMS surveys by phone or mail. The PRAMS survey includes questions about numerous health topics such as:

  • Access to prenatal care;
  • Pregnancy intention;
  • Alcohol use;
  • Smoking and smoke exposure;
  • Type of insurance;
  • Intimate partner violence;
  • Postpartum depression;
  • Breastfeeding; and
  • Infant sleep position.

In Texas, PRAMS provides the most comprehensive population-based data on maternal health during and after pregnancy. Along with several other state agencies and stakeholders, the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) uses PRAMS data to inform, develop, and drive policies to improve the health of Texas mothers and babies.

Previously reported annually as a Databook, Texas PRAMS data are now published in an interactive dashboard. You may the view the PRAMS Data Dashboard on the Texas Health Data site. The dashboard currently displays survey results in three different views and is updated annually. Due to the CDC timeline for data collection, data cleaning, and weighting, the data is generally available two years after the end of each birth year.

The 2017-2021 Texas PRAMS Questionnaire and 2018 Databook are available below. Previous years are available on request.
