Services Offered

Austin State Hospital (ASH) works in partnership with patients and their families to develop a recovery and wellness plan that supports each patient’s return to his or her community.  ASH provides an array of professional and support services that supports and guides each individual in his or her recovery.

Admissions will provide evaluations and information so that you or your family member can be admitted to the service area that can offer programs specific to recovery needs and provide the best care possible during this challenging time.  Each patient will start working on his or her recovery and safety plan in Admissions.  Admissions may also provide information on other programs that would better meet your current recovery needs.

There are three primary service areas at Austin State Hospital - Adult Psychiatric Services, Specialty Services, and Children & Adolescent Psychiatric Services.  Each service area has different units where patients are assigned to a room and a bed, shown where to put personal belongings, and are oriented to what is available on the unit.  Meals are served each day in the dining rooms with between meal snacks served on the units.  Visitor hours vary for each service area - you will get this information when you or your family member is admitted.  There is also information on what you can bring when you come to visit.

When you (or your family member) arrive on the unit, you will meet the professional and support staff that you will be working with to set and reach your recovery goals while you are in the hospital.  At first there will be a lot of assessments and evaluations where you will be asked questions so that the staff can get to know you and you can get to know the staff.  All of this information will assist the treatment team to work with you to create your recovery and safety plans, which outline the steps that will help you reach your discharge goals.

Austin State Hospital staff is committed to providing the best care possible.  Our approach to treatment is built upon the recognition that many of our patients have experienced some sort of trauma or loss in their lives.  We will work to build healthy relationships with those in our care by creating a safe, trusting, and respectful environment.  Our goals are to role model and encourage therapeutic interactions, empower people to make good decisions, and to help them feel connected to others again in a positive manner.  As we build these relationships, we will be better able to recognize warning signs and act accordingly to assist behavioral escalation. We believe each person possesses unique strengths and talents to build upon in treatment, and these will be incorporated into individualized safety plans.

The safety, well-being and recovery of those entrusted to our care are our priority.
