Austin Library Services

Who does the Clinical Library serve?
Resource sharing and inter-library loan

The Patron Population The ASH Clinical Library serves the professional, para-professional, administrative and support staff of the following institutions and agencies:

  • Austin State Hospital
  • Trainees in the ASH professional training programs
  • Clincial Faculty in the ASH residency programs
  • Department of State Health Services
  • All other DSHS state mental health facilities (state-operated hospitals and state centers)
  • The general public for general reference information, but not for circulation, photocopy or ILL services

Reference Services
Reference service is available on a walk-in, call-in or e-mail basis. We provide ready-reference, bibliographic citation checking and online searches, including Medline searches, to fulfill your information needs. We are connected to a large array of topical databases through the Texas State Electronic Library (please contact the librarian for user ID and password information). The library also provides a current awareness service where the patron may request updates on a specific topic of interest, and the librarian sends weekly lists of citations from our in-house journals.

Resource Sharing and Inter-Library Loan
The Clinical Library can share its resources with individuals within our patron population, either by loaning our own items, or by securing books and journal articles via inter-library loan through the Texas State Library. We also have access to the Texas Medical Association Library collection. We also provide a table of content service which enables TDMHMR mental health facility staff to select three of our current journals and receive table of contents from those journals. Staff can then request photocopies of articles for use in research and study. There is a photocopier in the library which patrons may use, but please be aware that there are copyright laws and guidelines which must be followed.

Circulation Services
The library's circulating collection includes books, audiotapes, and videotapes. Many management titles formerly housed at the Central Office Library can now be found at the Clinical Library. You can access the library's web-based online catalog to browse our collection or search for material. Reference titles are non-circulating, as are journals. The current circulation period is four weeks and items may be renewed if they are not requested by another patron. New books circulate for two weeks. If you check out a book from the library, please return it or renew it by the due date so that others may access the information.
