Services Offered

Big Spring State Hospital partners with patients and their families to prepare patients for a productive return to the community. One of the ways that is accomplished is through the offering of classes led by Big Spring State Hospital's Activity Therapies Department or ATD.

ATD classes provide individualized life skills training and leisure opportunities that promote recovery and wellness. We embrace a holistic approach within the least restrictive environment, encouraging physical and mental wellness through a variety of therapeutic activities. Recreation therapists focus on offering many fitness opportunities that promote physical wellness in an enjoyable and fun environment. Skills training groups use this time to engage patients in leisure activities and to identify community resources and recreational opportunities for patients to engage in once they return to the community. Activities promote goals and independence, as well as allow patients to demonstrate and practice skills needed in the community.

Some of the classes include therapeutic arts and crafts, music therapy, recovery process, wellness skills, animal assisted therapy and hands-on experience in the hospital-run greenhouse.

Community volunteers work closely with ATD by providing special resources, including clothing, volunteer time, gift bags for new patients, and gifts for special occasions. The Fashion Salon provides clothing for patients while they are hospitalized, allowing them to shop in a boutique setting for articles of clothing. All patients may request services from the Hair Salon such as styling, haircuts, perms, color and conditioning. The volunteers also assist with a variety of leisure, recreational, and social activities, including holiday celebrations, are provided for all patients.

The Chaplain participates with community ministerial organizations to provide information to the community church leadership toward understanding the mission of the state hospital and in gaining knowledge of the dynamics of mental illness. The chaplain coordinates services in the Tollett All-Faith Chapel, as well as on residential patient units, for patients from a variety of religious backgrounds. The local Catholic Diocese provides Mass services for patients weekly.
