Rio Grande State Center (RGSC) Community Relations & Volunteer Services

The Community Relations’ department mission is to enhance the quality of life of the individuals served by Rio Grande State Center (RGSC) through donations, resources, public education and volunteerism, beyond what is available from RGSC.

In 2008, RGSC dissolved its Memorandum of Understanding with the existing Volunteer Services Council. In 2012, a group of committed community members incorporated and formed the RGSC Citizens Volunteer Council. As a tax exemption and the mission of this council remains unchanged from the previous one – “To enhance the quality of life of the individuals served at RGSC.” It is through their efforts that a variety of projects are underway. To become a council volunteer or give a donation, please contact them at for more information.

The Community Relations Department accepts donations on behalf of the state hospital and RGSC Citizens Volunteer Council of new and gently used in-kind goods and services that benefit the individuals served by RGSC. Join our Volunteer Team!
Volunteers have been a prime force behind better treatment for the mentally ill, individuals with cognitive disabilities, and for those needing primary health care. They encourage public concern for better facilities. They have built chapels, swimming pools and campgrounds to enhance the lives of people living throughout Texas. Most importantly, they have established a tradition of caring and healthful concern for those who are less fortunate. You have the opportunity to become a part of that tradition. We hope that you will join us.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Serve as a Patient Advocate on facility committees
  • Assist staff clerical support
  • Assist in recreational activities
  • Facilitate singing and musical activities
  • Fundraising/Solicitation through the Citizens Volunteer Council
  • Holiday Decorating
  • Provide live entertainment: dance recitals, choir programs, etc. in our in-house auditorium
  • Assist with the clothing bank

Community Relations staff can help you find your own special way of helping the individuals and patients served by Rio Grande State Center.
