San Antonio State Hospital Admission Information

The San Antonio State Hospital is a 302 inpatient psychiatric hospital with complete psychiatric and rehabilitative services.

Director of Admissions: John Rasch, M.D.
Phone: (210) 531-7831
Hours: 24 hours a day
Fees: Based on ability to pay.

Intake Procedure: The local Mental Health Authority (MHA) must authorize care for any individual seeking inpatient hospitalization services offered by the San Antonio State Hospital (SASH). (Most individuals who are admitted to SASH have been committed by the court, however, the local Mental Health Authority may recommend voluntary admissions for adults.) Once authorization is obtained, the patient will first be processed through the admission's office (open 24 hours a day – 7 days a week) and subsequently moved to a treatment unit where they will be followed by an assigned treatment team. The team of professionals will develop an appropriate treatment plan with the patient. If in-patient hospitalization is deemed unnecessary by the treatment team, the MHA is notified and discharge planning is initiated. If in-patient treatment is necessary, the treatment team will continue to provide in-patient psychiatric treatment to prepare the patient for discharge, and/or transfer to an alternate placement.
