Community Relations Volunteer Services

Volunteer programs have been an important part of the San Antonio State Hospital since 1952. Volunteers have been involved in providing extra opportunities, activities and support for persons receiving treatment at the San Antonio State Hospital. We offer many opportunities for volunteering. You can volunteer on an ongoing or choose to support a special event or individual project. We welcome all who have a heart to serve those in need.

Opportunities for volunteering include:

  • Host a unit party
  • Prepare and deliver individual birthday gifts
  • Host a unit Christmas party
  • Become a Volunteer Friend – Visit, listen, read, or write letters for a patient
  • Provide live music for a party
  • Assist with a Holiday event
  • Shop for gifts & prizes throughout the year
  • Help in the Trinkets & Treasures Thrift Shop
  • Provide support to Chaplaincy Department during Religious Services
  • Assist in maintaining the Family Lodge
  • Volunteer in our donations sorting room
  • Volunteer your time and talents to build or maintain a flower beds

The Volunteer Services Council (VSC) of the San Antonio State Hospital is a non-profit 501( c ) 3 organization whose mission is to "promote and enhance the well-being of persons with a mental illness and to contribute to their rehabilitation and recreation needs not provided through state funding.” The VSC of SASH was founded in 1952 by the Women’s Club of San Antonio’s Modernist Group. The VSC generates funds to support patient programs through various fundraising projects including “Phone Calls From Santa,” “Trinkets and Treasures Resale Shop Sales,” participation in Macy’s “Shop for a Cause Day,” and an annual “Christmas Appeal.” Additional appeals are made to the community to support individual projects.

Activities and projects funded by the VSC are:

  • A 250 seat All Faiths Chapel
  • An outdoor swimming pool
  • Picnic shelters
  • 2 baseball fields
  • A 6-cottage transitional living facility
  • A Meditation Garden
  • Shade pavilions
  • Birthday and Christmas gifts
  • Holiday parties
  • Clothing and personal care items
  • Tickets to recreational events
  • Transportation to job interviews
  • Reading material
  • Household startup items
  • Family Lodging
  • Family education and community awareness about mental illness
