About Waco Center for Youth

In the physical facilities of World War I Camp McArthur, Waco State Home was established in 1919 to serve dependent and neglected children in Texas. Originally, under the control of the Texas Hospital Board, the Home was run subsequently by the Texas Department of Public Welfare and in 1957 the Texas Youth Council was organized to manage homes for dependent children and training schools for delinquent youngsters.

In September 1979, Waco State Home became Waco Center for Youth and began a new residential treatment program under the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation to treat emotionally disturbed adolescents.
