DSHS Raises Summertime Public Health Awareness

Summer brings along some health hazards. Extreme heat means people should stay in air conditioning whenever possible, drink plenty of fluids, wear cool clothing, and take frequent breaks from outdoor activity. Around water, adults should pay close attention to children to prevent drowning, and no one should swim alone. People should also protect themselves against a rare but potentially deadly infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis, or PAM. Avoid activities in warm bodies of freshwater and hold your nose or use a nose clip when you’re in the water.
