DSHS Investigating Center Illnesses

News Release
May 8, 2008

The Texas Department of State Health Services is investigating a cluster of gastrointestinal illnesses in more than three dozen people who attended a Relay for Life event at Roughrider Stadium in Center last Friday evening.

Illness symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and fever. Anyone who attended the event and had these symptoms is asked to notify DSHS in Tyler at (903) 533-5262. Those needing medical attention should contact a doctor or other medical care provider.

DSHS officials said the investigation is continuing and that no organism or specific source for the illnesses have been confirmed yet, though some kind of food or drink served at the event is suspected.

An estimated 450 people attended the fund raising event.

Center is in Shelby County in East Texas.
