DSHS to Host 17th Texas HIV-STD Conference

WHAT: The 17th Texas HIV/STD conference.
WHEN: May 24-27, 2010
WHERE: Renaissance Hotel, 9721 Arboretum Blvd., Austin
WHO: More than 800 health professionals to attend biennial conference to exchange information about HIV/STD prevention, intervention, policy and clinical care in Texas. It is sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services in collaboration with the Center for Health Training and the Texas Public Health Association. More than 150 presenters from around the world will speak at the four-day event.
HIGHLIGHTS: Monday, May 24
1:30 p.m. HIV/STD State of the State address, Ann S. Robbins, Manager, HIV/STD Prevention and Care Branch, DSHS, Austin.

2 p.m. Keynote Address: Back to Basics in HIV Prevention, Elizabeth Pisani, Director, Ternyata Limited, London, U.K.

Tuesday, May 25
10:15 a.m. Texas HIV/STD Research Award Finalist Presentations and Ceremony. Dr. David Lakey, DSHS commissioner, will present the Texas HIV/STD Research Award to one of three finalists at 11:30 a.m.

Wednesday, May 26
10:15 a.m. Expedited Partner Therapy Panel Discussion. EPT allows clinicians to treat sex partners of patients with certain STDs.

Thursday, May 27
11:30 a.m. Christopher Bates, Director, Office of HIV/AIDS Policy, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C., will discuss development of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.
