New Disaster Documentary Series Being Screened to Community Leaders in Amarillo

WHAT: A screening tour of Surviving Disaster: How Texans Prepare is coming to Amarillo to show the new emergency preparedness video series to community leaders and equip them to show the videos to local audiences.

WHO: The Texas Department of State Health Services is hosting the screening for state and local officials; leaders in business, healthcare, academia and media; and members of professional associations, civic groups and faith-based organizations.

A panel of experts will be at the screening. Panelists include: Rick Tull (DSHS), Sarah Johnson (National Weather Service), Maribel Martinez (Amarillo/Potter/Randall Office of Emergency Management), and Colleen O'Neal (Texas Department of Public Safety).

WHY: Texas is vulnerable to disasters. Being prepared is a necessity. The new video series provides community leaders a tool they can use to raise awareness about disasters locally and increase preparedness levels in their communities.

ABOUT THE SERIES: Surviving Disaster: How Texans Prepare is a series of six short documentary videos. Each one features a Texas community that has experienced a disaster. Survivors tell their stories of survival from wildfires, flash floods, tornadoes and hurricanes. Experts offer guidance on how to plan for disasters.

The videos are packaged with a screening guide and other tools designed to help leaders screen the videos and promote preparedness locally. The series was produced by DSHS in partnership with the Texas Division of Emergency Management. It is part of the state’s Ready or Not? emergency education campaign.

The videos are available for viewing, downloading and sharing at www.TexasPrepares.org/SurvivingDisaster.htm. DVDs can be ordered from the same website. All videos are available in English and Spanish.
