Clinical Lactation Practicum

Course Objective: Learn and improve hands-on techniques used in consultations with breastfeeding mothers through observation of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and application of skills learned.

The Clinical Lactation Practicum (CLP) focuses on increasing the health care professional’s knowledge of lactation problems and methods of intervention. The CLP provides an opportunity for direct observation, instruction, and hands-on demonstration of breastfeeding support and counseling. Students shadow hospital- and clinic-based experienced IBCLCs.

The Clinical Lactation Practicum is a very competitive program. Participation is limited to 2-3 students per location and date. There are specific dates for degreed and non-degreed students. Degreed professionals include degreed, licensed, and board certified professionals such as physicians, nurses, dietitians, nutritionists, and IBCLCs. Degrees should be in the health care or medical field. Non-degreed para-professionals include Peer Counselors, La Leche League Leaders, WIC Certifying Specialists, etc. Therefore, enrollment dates and availability is limited.

This is a 2-day course with a registration fee of $65. The first day will be observation at a hospital. The second day is at the Lactation Support Center, observing and practicing hands-on assistance with clients. Lunch and snacks are on your own.

If you are not currently employed by a Texas WIC agency or hospital, students will need to provide proof of immunizations and TB test in advance. You may also be required to complete patient safety modules in advance to comply with the hosting hospital’s policy regarding patient safety and liability. Individual Lactation Support Centers will handle site specific information.

Prerequisite:

  • Students must successfully complete Principles of Lactation Management (POLM) and Lactation Counseling and Problem Solving (LCAPS) trainings no more than 5 years prior to attending the CLP.
  • IBCLCs interested in attending a CLP rotation are exempt from these training pre-requisite courses.

Registration deadline: Six (6) weeks prior to the class date.

Cancellation/No Show:  If you fail to show up for your scheduled class, you will still be held responsible for the registration fee. If you are unable to attend, it is IMPERATIVE that you notify us and the Lactation Service Center (LSC) directly. No shows will forfeit the opportunity to re-register for a period of not less than one year.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. Do I have to be a WIC peer counselor to attend the CLP?
No. Anyone working directly with breastfeeding moms is encouraged to attend the CLP – especially anyone interested in sitting for the IBLCE exam.

  2. What if I haven’t attended POLM/LCAPS, can I still register for the CLP?
Yes, as long as both trainings have been attended prior to a CLP rotation. You will need to select dates after the trainings. For example, if you have registered for POLM and LCAPS in March/April you must select preference dates any time after April.
