Breastfeeding Courses

Annual Texas WIC Nutrition/ Breastfeeding Conference

Sponsored by

The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and Texas Association of Local WIC Directors (TALWD)

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) offers breastfeeding courses to prepare health-care providers to support breastfeeding women and infants. DSHS believes that a positive, proactive approach to breastfeeding promotion and support is achieved through team effort. DSHS encourages all health-care workers who work with breastfeeding women and infants to attend these trainings.

General Information on Breastfeeding Trainings

Effective immediately, the Texas Association of Local WIC Directors (TALWD) will be handling all registration aspects of the DSHS fee-based breastfeeding classes. This includes:

  • Principles of Lactation Management
  • Lactation Counseling and Problem Solving
  • Clinical Lactation Practicum and
  • Peer Counselor Management

Important changes:

  • Registration and payment will be handled by TALWD through EventBrite.com; however, DSHS will still be scheduling the courses.
  • Available events (classes) can be found at https://TALWD.eventbrite.com.
  • Registration fees have increased $5 per class across the board.
  • Credit card payments are now accepted online and payment is expected at the time of registration.

If you have questions regarding registration or payment, contact TALWD at TALWD.Organizer@gmail.com.

Registration Deadline: Course space is limited, so register as early as possible. The deadline for registering for a course is two weeks before the course begins in most cases. The Clinical Lactation Practicum requires a six week advance registration.

Nursing mothers: A room will be provided if you need to pump during this time. Please bring a pump, attachments, and a small cooler with frozen “blue ice” packs to keep your expressed milk cold.

Special Needs: If you have special physical or dietary needs, please let us know at least two weeks in advance of the course.

Confirmation Notice: Confirmation notices are sent out via e-mail upon completion of registration.

Registration Fee: The registration fee is due prior to the start of class. Attendees who are not employed by a Texas WIC agency will not be admitted into the class without payment. If you fail to show up for your scheduled class, you will still be held responsible for the registration fee.
