Not all animals enter the shelter through the lobby. Stray animals are often apprehended by Animal Control or the Animal Services department and enter the shelter through the "back door," which is a special area designed to accept stray animals and prevent escape while they are being admitted into the shelter.

Animals are better off in a well-operated animal shelter than running loose on the street where they can be hit by a car, tormented by children, or die of starvation.
