Good oral health is important for a healthy pregnancy. The Smiles for Moms and Babies (SMB) project focuses on reducing the prevalence of oral disease in pregnant women and infants and emphasizes the importance of oral care before, during and after pregnancy. The SMB project works with Texas home visiting programs and demonstrates the role home visitors have in preventing dental disease.

Project objective: Promoting oral health among pregnant women and babies through the following activities:

  •  Integrating oral health into Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), Parents as Teachers (PAT), and other home visiting
  •  Developing and disseminating Texas Perinatal, Infant, and Early Childhood Oral Health Guidelines.
  •  Educating medical and dental providers about the importance  and safety of dental care during pregnancy.
