Thank you for visiting the Ambulatory Surgical Centers program webpage. The Department of State Health Services maintains this webpage, but pursuant to Senate Bill 200, regulatory authority over Ambulatory Surgical Centers has transferred to the Health and Human Services Commission. (HHSC) as of September 1, 2017. |
The Texas Ambulatory Surgical Center Licensing Act was first enacted in 1985 by the 69th Legislature. Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASCs) are commonly referred to as "day surgery centers." An ASC must provide surgical services as its primary service. ASCs do not provide overnight or inpatient care. Care is provided on an out-patient basis.
The Department develops rules that establish minimum standards for ASC licensing procedures; for granting, denying, suspending, and revoking a license; for licensing fees; for operation; and for requirements concerning design, construction, and the Life Safety Code.
