APPLICATION DEADLINE: To submit a proposal, applicants must first register with the Hogg Foundation’s grants management system (Fluxx) by Feb. 25, 2022. Due Date: March 4, 2022.
$ AVAILABLE: Depending on the quality of proposals received and the funds available, the foundation plans to award up to five Peer Policy Fellow positions. The peer policy fellow salary is expected to be between $40,000 to $50,000 per year plus fringe benefits. The foundation funds 95 percent of the fellow’s annual salary and 100 percent of the fringe benefits. The grant also provides $5,000 for a mentor stipend, $3,000 for the fellow’s professional development, and 10 percent overhead. The professional development funds are for the sole use of the policy fellow. A $5,000 stipend for travel-related expenses will be included for grantees located outside of the Austin area to facilitate their participation in the Texas legislative process and other policy-related activities conducted in Austin. The fellowship is expected to last two years.
ELIGIBILITY: Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, governmental entities, and higher education institutions in Texas are eligible to submit proposals. Peer fellows should be certified as mental health peer specialists or substance use recovery coaches. This requirement ensures that that the individual is someone with lived experience of a mental health condition and/or substance use and is willing to share their story with others. Peer fellows must have two years of recent employment of some type. This employment may be paid or volunteer. Recent college graduates (within the past 18 months) may substitute education for work experience.
PURPOSE: The Hogg Foundation’s Mental Health Policy Academy and Fellows Program was launched in 2010 to support organizations in building their capacity for mental health policy work by providing financial resources and legislative expertise. The program involves a two-year fellowship with a grantee organization, one-on-one mentorship, opportunities to witness and take part in the legislative session, monthly academy training sessions and professional development, and a trip to Washington D.C. to network with national-level mental health policy advocates. The goal of this initiative is to increase the voice of individuals with lived experience with mental health and/or substance use conditions in mental health policy development and implementation, and to build consumer capacity to effectively engage in mental health and substance use policy and advocacy in Texas.
