National HIV/AIDS Strategy

The National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States (NHAS) is a plan to stop the spread of HIV. The plan visualizes a country in which new HIV infections are rare. When new infections occur, every person will be able to access high-quality, life-extending care, free from stigma and discrimination. This access will occur regardless of age, gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or socio-economic circumstance.

A key strategy for action includes widespread testing and linkage to care. Routine HIV screening is key to decreasing new infections. When people know their status, they can decrease their viral load and protect their partners.

Medical providers in Texas are key to fighting HIV in your community. Routine HIV screening is easy to implement, inexpensive and covered by most insurance companies. If you are uncomfortable delivering results, there are resources to help. Each new HIV transmission prevented increases the quality of life for your patients and saves money.

You take your patient’s blood pressure and weight. You vaccinate against the flu and other easily transmitted diseases. You treat them when they are ill. Your patients trust you and want to be healthy. Help your patients know their HIV status by implementing routine HIV screening in your practice.
