Clinical Practice Guidelines for HIV-Infected Pregnant and Non-Pregnant Adults

Policy Number  800.004
Effective Date  February 17, 1998
Revision Date  May 1, 2000
Approval Authority  TB/HIV/STD Section Director

1.0 Purpose

This Texas Department of State Health Services, TB/HIV/STD Section (Section) policy is provided to formally adopt two guidelines for use by clinicians in providing care and services to HIV-infected pregnant and non-pregnant adults. The two guidelines are the Clinical Practice Guidelines for HIV-Infected Pregnant Adults and Clinical Practice Guidelines for HIV-Infected Non-Pregnant Adults.

2.0 Background

To compliment the goal of preventing and treating HIV positive individuals and their families, the Section recognizes that certain clinical guidelines are needed to ensure that care is provided in a safe and efficacious manner. These two guidelines, based on scientific research and the clinical experience of nationally recognized experts, may be used by clinicians across Texas to establish protocols for providing care and services to adults infected with the HIV disease.

3.0 Authority

V.T.C.A. Health and Safety Code, §85.003, Department as Lead Agency and Primary Resource; Health and Safety Code, §85.040, Evaluation of Funded Programs; Health and Safety Code, §85.041, Records and Reports.

4.0 Adoption of the Guidelines

With this policy, the Bureau formally adopts the two guidelines which were developed to assist clinicians across the state in establishing care and service protocols for the affected groups. The Clinical Practice Guidelines for HIV-Infected Pregnant Adults were released in April 1996 and the Clinical Practice Guidelines for HIV-Infected Non-Pregnant Adults were released in June 1994. Both guidelines are updated periodically. Other equivalent guidelines with similar content may also be used.
