Public Health Improvement Newsletters

Public Health Improvement supports the strengthening of public health infrastructure in counties that do not have local health departments. The program is funded by Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant (PHHSBG). The funds enable regions to assist counties to build capacity to carry out the ten essential public health services in counties not served by a local health department. One of the main priorities is to build public health infrastructure where it is currently lacking in Texas.

Infrastructure building activities include, but are not limited to the following activities:

  • Assessing county level health status and identifying public health priorities;

  • Assessing local public health system strengths and weaknesses;

  • Providing technical assistance at the local/regional levels to develop community and system improvement plans;

  • Working with local elected officials to create an understanding of  public health issues;

  • Appointment and support of a local health authority;

  • Developing local public health advisory councils; creating local health departments; and

  • Providing technical assistance to existing local health departments to broaden the scope of their activities.
