Texas School Health Advisory Committee

The Texas School Health Advisory Committee (TSHAC) was created by Texas Health and Safety Code, Chapter 1001, Section 1001.0711.  TSHAC advises DSHS in its support for and delivery of coordinated school health programs and school health services. TSHAC seeks stakeholder input on these topics and shares recommendations to DSHS on school health best practices and resources for school health stakeholders.

The committee is composed of one representative from the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), appointed by the Commissioner of Agriculture; one representative from TEA, appointed by the Commissioner of Education; the department's School Health Program Coordinator or other department representative; and 17 members appointed by the Executive Commissioner of the Health and Human Services Commission which shall consist of

(2) school superintendents, assistant superintendents, school principals, assistant principals, or school district board members

(1) registered school nurse or school nurse administrator

(5) parents of school-aged children with at least one parent of a child with special needs

(1) physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner

(4) organization or agency representative involved with health of school-aged children

(1) physical educator or physical education administrator

(1) health educator or health education administrator

(1) school nutrition administrator

A member must regularly participate in TSHAC meetings and may also have to participate in subcommittee meetings, projects, and presentations. Meetings will be held in Austin at least twice a year or more at the call of the presiding officer. Virtual attendance at advisory committee meetings is allowed, except for the chair.

If you are interested in issues surrounding school health, you might be interested in joining the Texas School Health Advisory Committee (TSHAC).  

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is accepting applications for membership on the TSHAC for the following positions:

  • Representative from an organization or agency involved with the health of school children (3 vacancies)
  • Medical professional (practicing physician, practicing physician assistant, or practicing nurse practitioner) that provides health services to school-age children (1 vacancy)
  • Person working in a school as a certified health educator (1 vacancy)

Research and Recommendations

Research and Recommendations (R&R) documents are created to support school districts in implementing coordinated school health. R&Rs are developed by TSHAC and revised as needed to help districts comply with legislative mandates and navigate prevailing school health issues. Schools are permitted to utilize or modify the documents listed in the School Health Resource Library’s TSHAC/SHAC page to meet the needs of the individual school.
