Office of Academic Affairs

The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) serves as the hub for supporting and strengthening relations between the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and academia.  These solid partnerships are essential in fulfilling our vision of an equipped, engaged and re-energized public health workforce in Texas.  

The OAA operates a preventive medicine residency program, provides continuing education services, facilitates internship experiences and workforce development, and administers an Institutional Review Board.

Preventive Medicine Public Health Residency Program

The DSHS Preventive Medicine Public Health Residency Program prepares qualified physicians for a competent, productive preventive medicine practice and career. This program is a fully accredited, two-year, full-time residency.

Internship Opportunities

DSHS recognizes that developing and maintaining a health workforce appropriate in skills and numbers is critical for the agency to accomplish its mission. Considering the agency’s scope of responsibilities, statewide facilities, public health and behavioral health expertise, and range of partnerships with academic and other organizations, DSHS is well suited to host students looking for practice or research experiences to meet their academic (internship, practicum, or clerkship) requirements. Most DSHS internships target graduate students, although, undergraduate students are also welcome to apply.

Institutional Review Boards

An Institutional Review Board (IRB) is an administrative body established to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in research activities conducted under the auspices of the DSHS and personal health information requests submitted to DSHS programs needing approval by an independent board.  This includes human subject research contracted to public or private entities.  The IRB has the authority to approve, require modifications in, or disapprove all research activities that fall within its jurisdiction as specified in the federal regulations, state regulations and statutes, and institutional policy. 
There are two IRBs at DSHS, each with the responsibility to protect human subjects in DSHS research or using their DSHS data.
IRB #1:  Located within the Office of Academic Affairs. Reviews DSHS-affiliated social, behavioral, educational, and health science research. 
IRB #2:  Located within the Division for Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Reviews DSHS-affiliated mental health, mental retardation, and substance abuse research.
