Preventive Medicine Residency

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Preventive Medicine Residency is a two-year ACGME-accredited program that prepares physicians for leadership roles in public health and population medicine. Established in 1957, the program combines academic training, practical experience, and mentorship to develop physicians who can improve health outcomes at the local, regional, and state levels. Graduates are eligible for board certification through the American Board of Preventive Medicine and serve in leadership positions across Texas and beyond.

Mission Statement and Goals: This program exists to prepare physicians for a competent and productive preventive medicine practice and career.  The curriculum and training experience enable the resident(s) to reach the overall program educational goals:

  1. Achieve core and preventive medicine specialty competencies necessary for effective practice,
  2. Master subject matter pertaining to the scope of public health and preventive medicine duties for DSHS, and
  3. Attain board certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

You’ll hear directly from residents about their experiences, why they chose us, and what makes this community a great place to train. We accept applications via ERAS beginning each September, interviews are conducted through January and the matched applicants begin on July 1.
