Shipping Specimens to Texas AR Laboratory

Shipping ARLN Specimens Header

Clinical swabs and isolates submitted to the AR Laboratory are considered infectious substances and must be shipped according to Category B Biological Substance, UN3373 requirements. As a submitter, you have legal responsibilities for handling, labeling, and shipping these biological substances.

  • Do not ship Category B substances via USPS. The AR Laboratory offers free Category B shipping of AR isolates and swabs through FedEx.
  • According to 49 CFR §173.199: Handling and Transporting Infectious Substances regarding handling and transporting infectious substances:
    1. Anyone responsible for packing Category B biological substances must be trained in proper specimen handling and submission protocols. This includes anyone who handles or prepares specimens for transport, procures specimen carriers, or transports specimens.
  • Under IATA regulations, anyone submitting dangerous goods to a public carrier must have a dangerous goods certificate of training.

Additional information on shipping infectious substances to the DSHS Austin Laboratory may be found at the laboratory’s general specimen shipping and mailing guidance pages.
