DSHS hosts interns across the state on a regular basis. Internship projects provide students with hands-on experience working on real-world public health projects that benefit Texans. Additional educational and networking opportunities expose students to the varied work of DSHS as well as the many career paths in public health.

The Texas Public Health Fellowship is a one-year paid, training program for individuals early in their public health careers. Fellows will receive hands-on experience in public health, professional development, and career guidance. Fellows come from a wide variety of backgrounds, levels of education, and have varied interests.
The DSHS Preventive Medicine Residency prepares physicians for a rewarding preventive medicine career. For more than 60 years, the residency program has trained physicians specifically in Texas public health law, demography, and epidemiology programs. Graduates of the program have greatly benefited Texas and hold key positions at local, regional, and state levels.
