Candida auris (C. auris)

Organism, Causative Agent, or Etiologic Agent

What is C. auris?

•       An emerging and often multidrug-resistant fungus

•       First discovered in 2009

•       Made nationally notifiable in 2018

•       Added to Texas “Notifiable Conditions List” in 2021

Candida auris (C. auris) is a harmful yeast that can cause serious infections and death, particularly in people who are hospitalized or already ill. C. auris spreads easily because it can survive a long time on surfaces (e.g., door handle, counter) and even on people without causing symptoms.

C. auris infections are difficult to treat with antifungal medications. In some cases, C. auris cannot be treated with any available antifungal medications. This “antimicrobial resistance” makes some infections difficult or impossible to cure.

C. auris mostly affects patients with existing medical conditions who require frequent or long healthcare stays. Patients with medical devices like breathing tubes, feeding tubes, and catheters are at an increased risk for infection. Patients taking antimicrobial medications for a long time are also at increased risk because it can slow the body’s ability to protect itself.
