Colonization Screening

A colonization screening is a test to detect if a person is carrying a bacteria or pathogen without showing symptoms of infection. Identifying these individuals allows facilities and public health partners to take early steps to prevent spreading the bacteria to others.
The AR Laboratory offers colonization screening for public health investigations of Candida auris and Carbapenemase-producing Organisms (CPO) such as CRE, CRPA, and CRAB. Details of these tests are described below. DSHS HAI epidemiologists, local health departments, healthcare facilities, infection preventionists, and other professionals work together to organize these screenings. It takes all of us to fight antimicrobial resistance, and clear communication among everyone involved is essential for successful screenings.
Important Considerations:
- Submitting Facilities should consult with their local health department (LHD) to coordinate a colonization screening. The LHD can assist identifying individuals that should be screened and will work with a state epidemiologist to schedule the screening.
- To proceed with requesting screening supplies, additional guidance, or support for more complex cases, contact a DSHS HAI epidemiologist at HAIOutbreak@dshs.texas.gov.
- Currently, we do not offer admission or discharge screenings for CRE, CRPA, CRAB, or Candida auris.
