Influenza Surveillance Report for MMWR Week 45

The influenza (flu) activity level for Texas for the week ending November 10, 2007 is “sporadic.” Sporadic activity indicates that isolated reports of lab confirmed influenza along with influenza-like illness (ILI) have been reported.

Reports were received from all 11 Health Service Regions (HSRs) for week 45. HSRs 1, 2/3, and 7 reported an increase in flu activity from the previous week. For a map of Health Service Regions, please visit the following website:

During week 45, four hospital laboratories throughout Texas and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Laboratory reported conducting a total of 554 influenza tests (antigen, culture, and PCR) to the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A total of 26 positive antigen tests and two positive PCR tests for influenza A (untyped) were reported from Bell, Bexar, and Nueces counties. One positive culture for influenza A (H3N2) was reported in NREVSS; the specimen was collected from a 32–year–old and submitted to the DSHS Lab by a provider in Nueces County. The DSHS Lab reported additional culture positives for influenza A (H3N2) collected from a 4-year-old resident of San Patricio County and from a 17–year–old resident of Bexar County. Finally, one report was received of influenza A (untyped) isolated from a 25–year–old resident of Falls County; this isolate was further characterized as influenza A (H3N2) by the DSHS Lab. The Air Force Institute for Operational Health (AFIOH) did not report any positive cultures for influenza virus in Texas in week 45. Additional positive rapid flu tests were reported by providers throughout the state (see Texas map).

No institutional outbreaks or school closures were reported for week 45.

Seventy–one sentinel providers reported data to the U.S. Influenza Sentinel Provider Surveillance System (SPSN) on patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) and total patients seen for any reason during week 45. Sixty–nine providers reported seeing patients during week 45; of those, 40 (58%) providers reported seeing at least one patient with ILI. Of all patient visits during this week, 4.00% were due to ILI. The ILI baseline for the West South Central Region (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas) of the United States is 4.3% for the 2007–2008 season. The baseline is the mean percentage of patient visits for ILI during non–influenza weeks for the previous three seasons plus two standard deviations.
