| Storage/Preservation Prior to Shipping | - Collect raw stool in sterile container.
- Keep refrigerated at 2˚C–8˚C or freeze immediately at -70˚C.
- If specimen is for Vibrio testing, store at room temperature (15˚C–25˚C).
- Place stool in transport medium.
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions for storage and shipping in transport media.
- If delays are expected, transport media may be refrigerated or frozen at -70˚C.

| Transport Medium | - An appropriate medium for stool specimens such as Cary Blair or GN Broth.
- For specimens in which a culture independent diagnostic test (CIDT) was positive and isolation is not performed, please submit the original material that yielded the positive result.

| Specimen Labeling | - At least two patient-specific identifiers required on specimen (e.g., patient full name, date of birth, medical record number).
- Three unique patient identifiers are preferred.
- Patient identifiers on specimen label must exactly match identifiers on submission form (e.g. abbreviated name on label and full name on form is not acceptable.)

| Shipping and Specimen Handling Requirements | - Ship according to Dangerous Good Regulations, IATA, and/or CFR 49.
- Category B Biological Substance, UN3373 shipping requirements apply.
- Submitters are responsible for packaging and shipping specimens according to regulatory requirements.
- Ship refrigerated specimens overnight on multiple
cold packs. One cold pack is not enough. - Ship frozen specimens overnight on dry ice in well insulated shippers.
- Ship specimens for Vibrio testing overnight to Laboratory at room temperature. Do not refrigerate.
- Ship specimens overnight Monday–Thursday to avoid weekend deliveries.
- Do not ship specimens for holiday or weekend delivery.
- Ensure transport media are not expired.

| Interferences/Limitations | - Improper storage or shipping temperatures limit organism recovery from specimens.
- In the event of an outbreak, the procedure may be modified to screen for an additional set of organisms.
- Where a specific agent of an outbreak has been previously identified and there is a backlog of specimens, the procedure may be modified to screen only for a specified organism.

| Additional Information | - In the interest of public health, specimens will be accepted up to 30 days from the date of collection in an effort to identify the causative agent.
- Please note the rate of recovery decreases over time.
- Specimens with positive CIDT results will be confirmed for the organism for which positive results were obtained. Please include results with specimen submission.
- Routine stool culture includes screening for Salmonella sp., Shigella sp., Vibrio sp., Campylobacter sp., Yersinia sp., and shiga-toxin producing E. coli.
