Prevention

Studies show that people with prediabetes who take part in a structured Type 2 diabetes prevention program and lose at least 5 to 7 percent of their weight through healthy eating and engaging in physical activity for 30 minutes on most days of the week can cut their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent (71 percent for people over 60 years old).

In addition, lifestyle change programs can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke associated with prediabetes and improve participants’ overall health.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains a national registry of organizations that offer quality, evidence-based Type 2 diabetes prevention programs, designed to help people with at risk for Type 2 diabetes with healthy eating, active living, and weight reduction. All of these programs have agreed to use a CDC-approved curriculum that meets the duration, intensity, and reporting requirements described in the Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program Standards.
