Specimen Labeling
  • At least two patient identifiers are required on specimen (e.g., patient full name, date of birth, medical record number). 
  • Three patient identifiers are preferred. 
  • Patient identifiers on specimen label must exactly match identifiers on submission form. (e.g., abbreviated name on label and full name on form is not acceptable.)

Shipping and Specimen Handling Requirements
  • Ship according to Dangerous Goods Regulations, IATA, and/or CFR 49.
  • Category B Biological Substance, UN3373 shipping requirements apply.
  • Handle as infectious agent using universal precautions. 
  • Triple-contain in accordance with federal shipping regulations. 
  • Submitters are responsible for packaging and shipping specimens according to regulatory requirements. 
  • Category B shipping applies for unidentified isolates.

Interferences/LimitationsSome genera and species can only be differentiated with molecular analysis that is not available at TDSHS.
Common Causes for Rejection
  • Cultures infested with mites.
  • Cultures broke in transit.
Additional Information
  • Isolates submitted for this test will be identified by this laboratory.   
  • Drug susceptibility testing on these organisms not available at the DSHS Laboratory. 
  • Upon request, isolates may be forwarded by the DSHS Laboratory to a reference laboratory for susceptibility testing at the submitter’s expense.
  • Testing at other reference laboratories is subject to fees charged by those laboratories.
