CHW Training and Certification Program Annual Report 

The Texas Department of State Health Services established the Promotor(a) or Community Health Worker Training and Certification Program (CHW Program) to develop and implement statewide training and certification standards, guidelines, and requirements for individuals who are certified as promotores or community health workers (CHWs), community health worker instructors (CHWIs), and CHW training programs, as mandated by Health and Safety Code, Chapter 48.

The CHW Program 2023 Annual Report provides data on certification and renewal rates, trends, curricula, and initial certification and continuing education courses. This data evaluates processes and identifies areas of strength and potential opportunities to improve the training and certification of CHWs in Texas.

  • The 2020 CHW Statewide Employer Survey was conducted by CHW Program to understand employer variations. These variations include the role, training, funding, and job scope of CHWs across worksites and employers.
