When there is a potential hazard, it is vital to have the right information. Doctors, health care professionals, and communities all need information on hazardous substances. This information helps reduce exposure and prevent potential health effects. Communication between the public and the HAT Program is crucial during the investigation phase of sites.

People who live near hazardous waste sites are often concerned that it might affect their health. The HAT Program uses several different methods to collect community health concerns; these include:

  • community questionnaires
  • door-to-door surveys
  • talking to people at public meetings
  • talking to people during public availability sessions
  • talking with community leaders

Community concerns are an important part of the HAT Program's work. We aim to understand and communicate all health issues to our partners. The HAT Program uses this information when we complete our Public Health Assessments or Public Health Consultations.
