Specimen Receiving
- The DSHS Austin Laboratory is located at 1100 West 49th Street, Austin, Texas 78756.
- Signs directing to the Laboratory’s Specimen Receiving area are located at the entrances to the DSHS parking area from Grover Street, North Loop, and Sunshine Drive.
- The Laboratory Specimen Receiving dock is located on the north side of the seven-story beige, brick Laboratory building. View a map of the DSHS Central Complex, showing the dock location (labeled “Lab Receiving”).
- After-hours receipt of specimens is not available.
- All specimens delivered by courier (FedEx, UPS, USPS, LSO-LoneStar Overnight, etc.) are accepted at the Lab during regular business hours only: 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday.
- Hand-delivered rabies specimens and environmental samples are accepted during regular business hours only.
- Saturday delivery of rabies specimens (before 8:00 a.m.) is available for same-day testing only after rabies laboratory staff are first notified about the submission.
- Rabies specimen submitters MUST notify the Rabies Team of the submission before delivery.
- DO NOT drop rabies specimens off at the Laboratory security desk or leave by Laboratory entrances. Improperly delivered specimens can pose a health risk to Laboratory staff and the public.
