Training – Foundations of HIV Testing and Navigation
Foundations of HIV Testing and Navigation is required for the DSHS-funded HIV/STD prevention and care services workforce within first year of employment. It is highly encouraged at least once for all staff funded by DSHS to provide HIV/STD services.
Foundations of HIV Testing and Navigation (FTN) – This training provides new HIV prevention contractors with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct a status-neutral HIV testing session. Participants will learn strategies to mitigate unconscious bias, offer brief counseling on combination prevention, provide test results, and navigate clients through prevention and care continuums.
This course is required course for NEW DSHS-funded HIV/STD prevention and care services staff, who will provide HIV tests or results, within their first year of employment.
By the end of this training, participants will have an opportunity to:
- Describe the status-neutral continuum (including PrEP, PEP, U=U)
- Explain combination prevention using the Healthy Options Job Aid
- Describe stigma and its impact on health inequities
- Define and mitigate unconscious bias
- Apply the process outlined in the Conversation Guide
Note: This course consists of six modules including: Prerequisites and five (two-hour) live virtual sessions (each with Pre- and Post-Work); with an estimated total time of 16 hours.

Foundations of Testing and Navigation (FTN) Update – This training provides experienced HIV contractors with updates to combination prevention methods, home HIV testing processes, and strategies to mitigate unconscious bias. Participants will also have the opportunity to review the status-neutral continuum and rewrite the HIV testing Conversation Guide.
This course is required for EXPERIENCED DSHS-funded staff who have already completed the longer Introduction to HIV Testing (IHT), or previous versions (FTN, FCT or PBC) and who provide HIV tests or results.
By the end of this training, participants will have an opportunity to:
- Describe updates to combination prevention (including PrEP, PEP, U=U)
- Describe stigma and its impact on health inequities
- Define and mitigate unconscious bias
- Review updates to home HIV testing processes
- Review the status-neutral continuum and rewrite the testing Conversation Guide
Note: This course consists of three modules: Pre-Work, a single (two-hour) live virtual session, and Post-Work; with an estimated total time of 5 hours.
