September is Newborn Screening Awareness Month

Texas Newborn Screening - Growing to Better Serve Texas Babies

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is proud to celebrate two major milestones that strengthen newborn screening across the state!

Over the past year, Texas has expanded the Newborn Screening (NBS) Panel and made courier service available to all NBS submitters. The growth of these two areas aids in Texas’ ability to continue to identify conditions early allowing for timely intervention.

New diseases now included in the Texas NBS panel:

  • Glycogen Storage Disease type II (Pompe)
  • Mucopolysaccharidoses Type 1 (MPS I)
  • Mucopolysaccharidoses Type 2 (MPS II)
  • Infantile Krabbe Disease (Krabbe)
  • Guanidinoacetate methyltransferase (GAMT) deficiency

We’re also excited to offer expanded courier service to all NBS submitters. Courier service is included in the cost of the NBS kit. The courier program provides shipment tracking, reduces delays associated with traditional mail, and helps ensure specimens reach the Laboratory faster. Courier service supports quicker testing and reporting of screening results for Texas newborns.

Now is the perfect time to join! Enroll today by completing the Courier Expansion Enrollment Form at bit.ly/49bixDb.

Together, we’re advancing newborn screening in Texas and protecting our smallest Texans.
