Purpose
The Community Health Improvement (CHI) team collaborates with school districts, health agencies, hospitals, government entities, youth organizations, community groups, and others to identify and address public health needs in the community.
What We Do
Child passenger safety education
Safe Riders Class
Do you or someone you know need a car seat? You can attend a one-hour Safe Riders class and learn how to safely install and use a car seat from a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.
If you or someone you know needs a car seat, you must meet our program eligibility requirements.
- Families must be low-income or must be experiencing financial hardship.
- One of the child’s primary caregivers must attend a Safe Riders Class.
- Expectant mothers must be in their third trimester.

Safe sleep education for parents and caregivers
If you or someone you know are in need of a safe sleep space, please complete the Safe Sleep Referral Request or open and scan the QR code below, and one of our Public Health Educators will contact you about a safe sleep space for your infant. Para Español, oprima aqui.

Texas Mother-Friendly Worksites are businesses that support employees who choose to breastfeed their infants. Your business may qualify for designation as a Texas Mother-Friendly Worksite if you have a written and communicated lactation support policy.

Oral health education
Smiles in Schools (SiS)
SiS is a state public health program. Licensed dental professionals can visit your campus with mobile dental equipment. There is no cost for the school and children receive preventative dental services at no cost. Parents receive a results form after their child's screening.

Child fatality review
Local Child Fatality Review Teams
Local Child Fatality Review Teams (CFRTs) are working groups of community partners. They review child deaths on a local level from a public health perspective. Reviewing a child’s death helps identify strategies to decrease preventable child deaths.
We support all local Child Fatality Review Teams.
