Funding and Awards
School health programs have the potential to be one of the most effective ways to improve the health of young people. One of the key resources needed to develop such programs is funding. There are numerous sources of financial support available for school health initiatives. At the bottom of this page, you will find a few funding sources for Texas school districts, and helpful resources for writing grants.
The SHP Friday Beat Newsletter provides bi-weekly updates on available grants, funding sources, and other resources for schools. We encourage you to sign up for the DSHS school health e-newsletter below.
School Health Champion Award
The School Health Champion Award (SHCA) is an award program from the DSHS School Health Program. SHCA funds school action plans based on results from a school’s School Health Index (SHI) assessment. The assessment focuses on one or more of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model components.
Schools can receive up to $10,000 (in reimbursement funds) to implement action plans resulting from the SHI assessment. For more information, contact the School Health Program directly at schoolhealth@dshs.texas.gov
