Screener Training
The Department of State Health Services (VHSS) Vision, Hearing, and Spinal Screening program offers free screening training. If you or a member of your staff needs training to become certified to provide vision, hearing, or spinal screenings, please click Regional Coordinators | Texas DSHS to find the coordinator closest to your area. They will assist you in registering for the training in your area. Registration is required to attend all training sessions.

Train the Trainer- External Instructor Training
We welcome your interest in becoming a VHSS External Instructor Program for your school or facility. Your application will be sent to management; you will be notified on how to proceed. Due to updated rules, we are experiencing an increase in requests across the state.
Currently, the Vision, Hearing, and Spinal Screening (VHSS) Program is updating the External Instructor Application and Training to be compliant with the new program rules.
Once the updates are complete, the customer service team or the regional coordinator in your area will contact you if additional information is needed. Submit the forms electronically to vhssprogram@dshs.texas.gov. The applications will be handled in the order they are received.
After the application has been reviewed, a decision will be made, and you will receive an email with the outcome.

Low-Cost Screening Services
Finding affordable providers can be a challenge. There are free and low-cost vision and hearing screening options in Texas. Eligibility may vary based on factors such as your age, where you live, and your income.
Call 2-1-1 or visit 211Texas.org as a first step in identifying provider services in your area. The online locator searches by zip code, or you can use the guided search to find vision and hearing screening providers in your area. Help is available in more than 90 languages, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
