Blood Lead Surveillance Frequently Asked Questions

Has DSHS altered the guidance for blood lead screening?

No, the screening guidelines have not changed. DSHS recognizes that healthcare providers may require adjustments to blood lead screening protocols.

Are laboratories still collecting and processing blood lead samples?

Please contact your laboratory to confirm they are still collecting and processing blood lead samples. If necessary, explore the availability of other collection locations. If no alternative can be identified, ensure a sample is collected as soon as can be safely scheduled.

Can healthcare providers use LeadCare II equipment to conduct blood lead screenings and report the results?

LeadCare II devices can still be used for initial capillary blood lead screening.

If the capillary result is 5 µg/dL or greater, the result must be confirmed with a venous sample by a public health or reference laboratory.

All blood lead screening results must be reported to BLSB. Reporting instructions are available if needed.

Why is blood lead testing important during this time?

Children are spending more time indoors, which may increase the risk of exposure to lead dust.

Where can I find guidance on providing pediatric well-care during COVID-19?

Please visit the American Academy of Pediatrics website for more information.
