Hepatitis E is a virus that infects the liver. Most people with hepatitis E recover with no long-term health problems. The occurrence of hepatitis E in the U.S. is very rare and is mostly associated with U.S. residents who travel to developing countries.
How do you get Hepatitis E?
The hepatitis E virus spreads when people eat or drink food or water contaminated with the virus.
What are the symptoms of Hepatitis E?
You may have no symptoms (especially young children). Some people have mild flu-like symptoms, dark urine, light stools, jaundice, fatigue, and fever. The virus incubates for 15 to 42 days.
How do you test for Hepatitis E?
Your health care provider will do a blood test to confirm your diagnosis.
What is the treatment for Hepatitis E?
There is currently no treatment for hepatitis E.
How can I avoid Hepatitis E?
You can protect yourself by using clean water for drinking, cooking, and brushing your teeth. Wash your hands often and cook food thoroughly.
