In the United States, over 100 million people are affected by diabetes and pre-diabetes. In this program, viewers will learn is it when the blood sugar level are high. The hormone that manages sugar levels in the body is insulin. Diabetes occurs when the insulin glucose cycle is disrupted.
Concussions and Sports Injuries. Streaming. 5 min. 2020. Senior High – Adult.
Concussions and injuries are a common occurrence for players of contact sports. About 20 percent of high school athletes who participate in them will suffer a concussion in a given year. Repeated concussions can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition only recently recognized as a grave risk to athletes. Concussions aren't the only sports-related injury high school students face. Breaks, strains, and overuse injuries all commonly occur in student-athletes. It's important to understand the risks, how to prevent injuries, and most importantly how to recognize and treat them when they occur. This video is part of the Teens’ Healthy Choices series.

In this program, a young man helping his mother with fibromyalgia is faced with a similar diagnosis. Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes pain in muscles and soft tissues all over the body. This condition is often more prevalent in women and has unknown origins.

Millions of people get sick from foodborne illnesses every year, and thousands of them die. Hazardous materials contaminating the food supply can also cost companies tens of millions of dollars and do untold damage to their reputations as well. This program discusses the most widely-used international food safety program, the "Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points" system, which ensures that the food reaching consumers is safe enough to eat. It includes developing a HACCP Plan, hazards, monitoring, verification, and recordkeeping.

This program focuses on the effects of alcohol on the still- developing adolescent and young adult brain. Students learn that the moldable nature of the young brain makes learning and acquiring new skills easier but also poses greater risks of addiction and dependence. Testimony from experts and recovering alcoholics clarify why people start to drink and why young people are at greater risk of developing an alcohol use disorder. The video then focuses the risks of alcohol abuse on different parts of the still developing brain and how alcohol affects decision-making, coordination, and memory. Viewers learn about the risks of binge drinking, which can cause blackouts and alcohol poisoning. The video details the difficulties of recovery from alcoholism but offers hope that recovery is possible.

The body can process alcohol in moderation, but when one overindulges, alcohol slows down the brain and nervous system, reducing coordination, perception, and inhibition. It can also damage brain cells and neurons as well as other organs such as the kidneys and liver and is especially harmful to developing bodies. Knowing when you've crossed the line between moderation and too much can be difficult. With potentially awful consequences connected to alcohol abuse, including alcohol poisoning, car accidents, and participating in unprotected sex, it's crucial for teens to know how alcohol stresses the brain, what signs of inebriation to watch for in themselves and their peers, and how to turn down a drink despite peer pressure.
