Dieting and Eating Disorders

Weight and fitness are concerns for many people. About 45 million Americans go on a diet ever year, and the number of obese people is rising around the world. At the same time, some people suffer from eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. It's clear that many people have health issues related to diet. Whether they eat too much or too little, eat the wrong things, or don't get enough activity to use the calories they consume, teens face many of these issues every day. Fad diets can be dangerous. Food choices can be limited. And body dysmorphic disorder can distort one's perception of their weight, leading people at healthy weights to "see" themselves as fat. Understanding these disorders and how to maintain a healthy diet is the first step to improving our relationship with eating.

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Attachment, and the Early Years Learning Environment: Research and Inclusive Practice

This book explores three major topics: adverse childhood experiences, attachment, and environment. Each child has a unique reaction to adversity in the early years, and the book discusses the effect upon approach and avoidance motivation for learning, and the rationale of trauma-informed practice. The influence from a secure attachment figure is explored, and links between emotions and involvement are presented. It highlights the current indoor and outdoor use of natural green spaces as a response to attention-fatigue and promotes comprehension of the issues in a context of attention restoration theory. Intervention for extended families is presented as an approach to supporting development and attainment in each generation, and to achieving a legacy beyond the professional network.

This book illustrates the historical dynamics of disability, adoption, and family. It explores disability and difference in the twentieth-century American family, particularly how notions and practices of adoption have (and haven't) accommodated disability, and how the language of risk enters into that complicated relationship. It reveals how the field of adoption moved from widely excluding children with disabilities in the early twentieth century to partially including them at its close.

Breaking Bad News, Part 1A (2 min.) Features a scenario that highlight an example in which the health care providers are not appropriately prepared for the family meeting. It addresses that poor delivery of care information to the patient, client, and family can create grief and conflict.
The Family Meeting Preparation, Part 1B (2 min.) Features a scenario that highlights how a pre-brief effectively assists the health care team in communicating with patient, client, and family. It addresses how the team can deliver information/concerns and collectively prepare a cohesive plan.
The Family Meeting, Part 1C (5 min.) Features a scenario that highlights a good family meeting with effective communication amongst the team and
in-depth information. The family is fully engaged and can ask questions to clarify, and the prognosis is fully explained to the family.

The "fight-or-flight" response is your body's built-in response to stress.
