Vital Statistics maintains closed agency records; Health, Social, Education, and Genetic History Records (HESEGH); and maintains the voluntary Central Adoption Registry, where adoptees and their family members can apply and if matched exchange information.
There are several ways you can find the completed adoption records you need:
- Apply to the
Central Adoption Registry.
- Contact the child-placing agencies that
operate their own registry.
- For
Health, Social, Education, and Genetic History Records, adult adoptees and their adoptive parents may obtain social and medical history from these records. For
sealed adoption records, adoption records are sealed by the court after an adoption has been granted and no identifying information about the biological family can be released without a court order.
- For
adoption agencies that have closed, the Central Adoption Registry (CAR) maintains many, but not all, adoption records from child-placing agencies that have ceased operation. Adult adoptees, adoptive parents, and other qualified persons may obtain non-identified information from these reports.
