2004-2005 Texas Influenza Surveillance Information

2004-2005 Season Summary

The weekly flu activity report for CDC week 3 (ending 1/22/05) remains widespread.

Reports were received from all 11 regions.
Nine of eleven regions report increased activity over last week, with two regions unable to determine the extent of flu activity in their area.

Data from our doctors in the sentinel provider surveillance network indicate that influenza-like illness (ILI) activity is over twice the standard background rate, an increase over last week.

Several schools are reporting increases in absences of students and staff members in region 3. No other institutional outbreaks were reported.

Culture confirmed flu has been identified in all regions with the exception of region 1.
Counties with culture confirmed flu include Bexar, Dallas, Harris, Tarrant, Tom Green, Walker, and Wichita.
College Station, which until recently had been mostly Flu B, has begun to even out and now reports more Flu A activity.

There have not been any other cases of the Flu B (Hong Kong), which was reported last week.
The majority of culture confirmed flu remain A. Much of the B activity is in the Harris, McLennan, and Brazos County areas.
There remains a good match between circulating flu strains and vaccine strains.
